But the move is also, of everything in the book, the closest to this site’s center: a claimed intersection between a named biblical individual and a dated geological event, with the dating chain running through both. This response takes the links in order and asks what each can bear.
The book’s case, stated as strongly as it deserves

Paraphrase
The book’s treatment is hedged more heavily than its critics usually note, and the hedges should be read as printed: the division phrase receives a “most likely” meaning rather than an asserted one, the placement is conditional, and the resulting estimate is flagged as distinct from the chapter’s preferred window. What this response presses is not the book’s care but the chain’s direction: which end of it does the establishing, and which end is being established. The chapter treats the geological date as the anchor and the text as what the anchor holds. Whether the verse can serve as that kind of mooring is the question.

What the book gets right
Four acknowledgments, and the first is the geology.
The science is real, and the book reads it accurately. The post-glacial flooding of the Bering land bridge is established work: sediment records from north of the Bering Strait show the shift to open marine conditions at about 11,000 calibrated years ago, and the book’s citation matches the published record [2]. Nothing in this response disputes the drowning; the question is what the drowning dates.
Second, the phrase is genuinely puzzling. “The earth was divided” is an unusual line, and it has carried several readings across the tradition. The book is within its rights to propose another, and its willingness to reason about the verse at all is more serious than treating the line as decoration.
Third, the hedging is honest. “Most likely meaning,” a conditional estimate, and a separate final window are exactly the marks of an argument that knows its own weight; a response that faulted the book for overclaiming here would be misreading it.
Fourth, the instinct behind the move is a good one. If biblical history and the record of nature are both historical, then somewhere a named person and a dated event should intersect, and looking for the intersection is legitimate. The question is only which direction the identification runs.
Test one: what does the phrase say?
The verse itself is minimal. “To Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided” (Genesis 10:25). Around it, the Table of Nations concerns where peoples settled; the table closes by saying that from these the nations spread over the earth (10:32), and the narrative’s next movement, Babel, explains how the scattering came about.
Within that furniture, the readings the tradition has tried fit into three families: the scattering of peoples and languages (the narrative’s own sequel), the apportioning of territories, and a physical rearrangement of lands. The first two draw on material the chapters actually contain. The third needs something the passage never mentions: no sea, no flooding, no coastlines appear in the verse or its setting. That absence does not disprove the reading; a text can name an event without describing it. But it means the identification cannot be established from the verse. It can only be fitted to it, and the fit is tightest for the model it serves. The book’s own phrase, “most likely meaning,” is a statement about fit, and this response takes it as exactly that.
Test two: does the date identify Peleg?
Suppose the bridges drowned; the record shows they did, as sea level rose through the late ice age and into the Holocene. What, then, dates Peleg? Here the chain’s direction becomes the issue, because the placement of Peleg is what needs establishing, and the book establishes it by the very event it is trying to link to him. The reasoning runs: the bridges drowned about 11,000 years ago; the drowned bridges are the division of Peleg’s day; therefore Peleg lived about 11,000 years ago. Each step is intelligible; together they form a circle. The verse supplies the person to the date, and the date supplies the century to the person; the join between them is the identification itself, and it is the identification that carries the weight.
A demonstration would need the identification’s two sides dated independently: the event from geology, which is done, and the person from something other than the event, which is not. Genesis, read with its own numbers, places the post-Flood generations thousands of years after creation, not tens of thousands of years before the present; the book reaches its placement by reading in the other direction. And even the event side requires selection: the drowning of the world’s land bridges was a process spread across millennia of rising seas, with different crossings submerged at different times. “In his days” needs one moment from that process, and the moment the book selects is the one its chosen bridge supplies. The identification, in short, is a match between a real date and a chosen phrase, and matches of that kind are hypotheses, not findings.
Test three: the proportional device
Grant both links, against the discussion above, and the third link does the heaviest lifting. Between Peleg near 11,000 years ago and Abraham near 4,000 on the book’s own accounting stands something like seven thousand years. Genesis 11:18-26 spans the interval in five named father-to-son links whose stated ages at fathering sum to fewer than two hundred years. The difference is carried by two devices at once: unrecorded generations, the genealogical elasticity examined in this series’ second response, and a new one, the proportional scaling of the lifespan decline, in which the tapering post-Flood lifespans are read as scaling the intervals between the named men.
The text says nothing about a scaling function. It gives each patriarch’s age when he fathered the named son and the years he lived afterward; the proportions the book applies are fitted to make its two anchors stand seven thousand years apart. A device calibrated between two assumed endpoints can connect them; it cannot validate either one. The numbers of these chapters turn out, once more, to be exact precisely where the book’s chronology needs them firm, at the Flood and its aftermath, and elastic precisely where the external dates need room. The proportional reading is the elasticity wearing arithmetic, and the arithmetic is done between its own endpoints.
Our response
The Peleg argument is where the book’s method becomes visible in one step. Across the dating chapter, a real literature supplies a number, and a reading supplies the link that lets the number land on a name. Here the number is the flooding of the land bridges, real and well dated at about 11,000 years ago, and the name is Peleg, real but undated except by the link. The join is the argument. Nothing in this response disputes the geology; the geology is not what the claim needs. What the claim needs is that Genesis 10:25 and the drowning of the bridges be the same event, and that sameness is, on the book’s own word, conditional.
Test four: what would the identification need?
A fair test of the Peleg step can be stated exactly, and every clause of it is available to the book’s future work.
First, an independent dating of Peleg: some line of evidence fixing his century that does not depend on the event the identification is meant to establish. Second, textual warrant that “the division” names submerged crossings at all, rather than the scattering the surrounding chapters narrate. Third, a single event to identify: a process the sources themselves spread across millennia has to be compressed, without loss, into “his days,” or the phrase must be shown to name one particular drowning among the many, chosen by something other than availability. Fourth, coherence upstream: with the Flood placed 40,000 to 70,000 years back, the generations from Noah to Peleg must themselves span tens of thousands of years, which returns the whole argument to the elasticity examined elsewhere in this series.
None of those requirements is impossible; each is a debt. The conditional label the book attaches is an honest statement that the debts are open.
What this leaves standing
Set the links side by side. The bridges drowned: the science is good and the book reads it well. The phrase is cryptic: the readings multiply, and the one chosen fits the model most naturally because the model chose it. The date is real: the name is not dated except by the date. And the proportional device is fitted between its two endpoints rather than derived from the text. The conditional estimate that results, 40,000 to 70,000 years, adds a fourth number to the book’s dating table without repairing any of the others; it is a distinct inference, exactly as the book’s own notes say, and a weaker one than the window it sits beside.
For this site’s purposes the Peleg step matters as more than a curiosity. It is the clearest single instance of the pattern the whole series has traced: a fixed external date and a flexible reading of a text, joined by an identification that is assumed rather than shown. And it shows the pattern’s cost in miniature. A verse that belongs, in its own chapter, to the story of how the nations scattered becomes a geological marker, and one of the patriarchs becomes an entry in a geochronology. Whether the verse can bear the particular history built on it is the question the book’s own conditional leaves standing, and it is the right question to ask of it.
