Beyond the Cosmos asks its readers to consider that physical reality may be larger than it appears. This first response describes what the book sets out to do, how its argument is built, and the standard this series will apply as it examines each major claim in turn.

The book’s aim, stated as strongly as it deserves

Creaturely concepts and experiences are not the measure of God; a reality larger than our perception should not surprise readers of a book that speaks of a God both present with his people and beyond their reach. It is worth setting out the strongest form of the book’s case before evaluating anything, because the book deserves a fair hearing and because the strongest version is genuinely interesting. At its best, the argument runs like this:

  • Reality is larger than our perception of it. Physics routinely describes structure that cannot be visualized, and the book draws on that fact rather than fighting it.
  • Scripture itself holds together things that look contradictory from one vantage point. A God who is present with his people and also beyond their reach is not a contradiction; the tension is real and readers of the Bible have long noticed it.
  • The book hedges where it should. Its closing chapter describes many of the dimensional applications as suggestions and starting points rather than fixed or exhaustive conclusions [2].

That combination — a bold hypothesis, a fair question, and honest qualification at the end — is not the profile of a project to dismiss. It is the profile of a project to examine carefully.

Our response

We agree with the book’s first instinct: creaturely limits should never be pressed onto God, and the questions the book raises about time, presence, and knowledge are questions worth asking. What the rest of this series tests is narrower and more concrete: whether the specific claims the book makes survive the evidence and the exegesis it appeals to. Those are separate questions, and keeping them separate is the whole point of a response site that intends to be fair.

The two-stage argument — and what each stage can carry

The book’s argument moves in two stages, and the stages carry very different kinds of weight [3]. The first stage moves from established physics and live theoretical programs toward a bigger physical picture: a cosmos with a beginning, and a program of unification physics in which additional spatial dimensions play a central role. The second stage moves from that picture to theology: if reality has this kind of structure, then several biblical teachings may be seen as coherent in a way they were not before.

The first stage contains a mixture that is easy to miss: some observations, some results that hold within specific models and inherit those models’ assumptions, and some constructions that are mathematically motivated but experimentally untested. The second stage is, at its logical core, an inference to coherence: it can show that a doctrine is compatible with a proposed physics, or illuminated by it. The book’s boldest formulations tend to draw their force from the first layer while spending it on the third and fourth. Most readers will find claims in all four categories they want to weigh on their own terms — which is exactly why the layers deserve to stay apart.

What dimensional analogies can show — and what they cannot

The book’s engine is analogy, and analogy is a legitimate engine. When the book reasons with simple geometric figures — how a shape would appear to a viewer confined to fewer dimensions, what a projection or cross-section would reveal — it does something real: it breaks the assumption that “not perceived” means “not present,” and it shows how a single object can relate to a smaller world in ways that look impossible from inside that world. At the level of intuition, these pictures work, and they are the book’s most persuasive passages.

The ceiling comes when a picture is asked to become a premise. An analogy can show that a claim is possible; it cannot show that the world is that way. Three specific bridges in the book’s argument need kinds of evidence an analogy cannot supply:

  1. That creation actually has the proposed structure. This is a question for physics — to be judged by the relevant models’ assumptions, tests, and open questions, not by the usefulness of the picture.
  2. That a biblical passage teaches the dimensional reading rather than merely admitting it. This is a question for exegesis — argued from the text’s language, context, and genre. A passage can be compatible with an idea without teaching it, and the difference matters for how much weight the passage can carry.
  3. That the dimensional description explains a doctrine rather than restating it. When “God is not limited by our time” becomes “God has an additional time dimension,” the reader should ask what the second statement adds as an explanation — and what argument requires that particular mechanism rather than another account of God’s relation to time.

Our response

These three checks are the burden of proof at each bridge of the book’s argument. They are not hostile tests; they are the ordinary tests any interpretive proposal should expect. The responses that follow apply them, one claim-family at a time, and they say plainly both where the book’s case holds up and where a step does not carry the weight placed on it.

Where the book is right — and deserves to be taken seriously for it

Fairness requires naming what the book gets right, and there is real substance here. Its recurring insistence that creaturely limits are not God’s limits is sound, and it echoes what Christians have said about time, space, and knowledge for centuries. Its confidence that careful study of nature honors the Creator is a good instinct, not a concession; a faith that feared investigation would be a smaller faith. Its central questions — how does God relate to time? how should we picture his knowledge of our choices? — are questions the church has lived with, not inventions for effect. And its instinct to end in worship rather than in victory is right.

The disagreement this site carries is not with those instincts. It is with particular claims, and with the point at which a good picture is asked to do the work of a proof. That is the difference this series will keep in view.

How the series will proceed

The remaining responses take up the book’s major claim-families one at a time:

The standard is fixed in advance. The book invites its readers to consider a larger reality; the least that consideration deserves is an answer of equal seriousness.
